Our History:

In 1962, Roger W. Hinner purchased a 5,000 square foot foundry located in what was known as “Tannery Town” in Merrill, WI. Merrill Steel’s primary business was the fabrication of steel bulk storage bins for the local farming community. With a company culture that was customer driven, Merrill Steel quickly grew to satisfy the commercial agricultural needs throughout the Midwest.

The 1980’s were dominated by market diversification that included the fabrication of structural steel and heavy plate for the general construction industry, along with expansion into industrial construction for the pulp and paper industry.

In 1995, responding to demand for larger-scale structural steel projects, a 365,000 square foot manufacturing facility was purchased in Schofield, WI, providing ample production space, accessibility to a larger, qualified workforce, plus convenient transportation access to the major arterial intersection of Interstate-39 and Hwy 29.

In 2006, the 160,000 square foot ACME structural steel facility in Springfield, MO was acquired. A central location, along with an experienced workforce, continued to fuel expansion into new markets, particularly projects requiring plate-work.

2023 saw the acquisition of our newest facility in Camanche, IA. Due to its sheer size, this site is planned to be used primarily for painting, fireproofing, and steel storage.

Today, under the continued direction of President Fred Schwalbach, and with experienced team members at all levels of the organization, Merrill Steel primarily serves a large-scale, diverse customer base, assists with LEED certification goals where needed, and maintains a pulse on the emerging needs of steel industry. The part of our history that repeats itself, as they say, is that Merrill Steel remains true to our original company culture: we are customer driven.
